Following the appeal launched in 2017, the projects listed below were selected at the 7th Meeting of the Parties to the Pelagos Agreement held on 12 December 2017 in Monaco. They will be led by international teams from the three countries and will be initiated during the first quarter of 2018: 

1. project «Pelagos Plastic Free – Integrated actions to reduce plastic debris in the Pelagos Sanctuary», directed by Legambiente Onlus, in partnership with Expédition Med, National Parc of Cinque Terre, Nation Parc of the Tuscan Archipelago, Unicoop Firenze, Mareblu and Novamont. The project has been allocated a budget of 83.000 euros;

2. project «Biological and toxicological contamination of cetaceans in the Pelagos Sanctuary: assessment, origin, monitoring and mitigation», directed by Groupement d’Intérêt Scientifique pour les Mammifères marins de Méditerranée et leur environnement (GIS3M), in partnership with l’Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale of Piemonte, Liguria and Valle d’Aosta (IZSPLV), Groupe d’Etude des Cétacés de Méditerranée (GECEM), Laboratorio dipartimentale veterinario dell’Hérault (VDV34), Vetagro Sup (ENVL) and Monacology. The project has been allocated a budget of 83.110 euros;

3. project «Proposal to develop and evaluate mitigation strategies to reduce the risks of ship strikes to fin and sperm whales in the Pelagos Sanctuary», directed by Tethys Research Institute, in partnership with British Antartic Survey, International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), WWF France, Souffleurs d’Ecume, Quiet Oceans SAS, University of Western Brittany (UBO) and the Yacht Club di Monaco (YCM). The project has been allocated a budget of 83.299 euros.
