Marine mammals in the Pelagos Sanctuary are subject of an increasingly growing ecotourism activity. For those who wish to encounter cetaceans, or simply explore the marine biodiversity during a sea trip, we give here few tips, information and warnings about their observation.
Swimming with cetaceans: danger, beware !
In recent years, the activity of swimming with marine mammals is provided by some operators of whale-watching. As representatives of the Pelagos Sanctuary, we cannot be favourable. This type of approach, at least intrusive for the animals is considered potentially very disturbing by the scientific community. It can in some cases cause accidents, both for cetaceans or swimmers themselves. We disagree with this activity: it is risky for the swimmers and disturbing for the animals.
If performed poorly, the observation of cetaceans may, be a source of trouble: respect their tranquillity.
