The Permanent Secretariat of the Pelagos Agreement and the Italian Ministry of Ecological Transition co-organized a workshop on ship strikes: "A Particularly Vulnerable Sea Area for the North Western Mediterranean".

This workshop took place on December 17th, 2021, in Rome, bringing together representatives of the Parties to the Pelagos Agreement as well as numerous organizations and stakeholders.

Collisions between ships and large cetaceans are the leading cause of non natural mortality in these species. Indeed, the aim of the workshop was to exchange scientific knowledge on the presence of cetaceans in the Sanctuary, on the assessment of mortality resulting from collisions, as well as to present tools to reduce the probability of collisions.

At the end of this workshop, France, Italy and the Principality of Monaco exchanged views on the proposal for the designation of a Particularly Sensitive Sea Area (PSSA) in the North-Western Mediterranean Sea to the International Maritime Organization, which the Parties to the Pelagos Agreement and Spain have decided to conduct jointly.
